EPS (expanded polystyrene foam) balls:

8 of 30mm in diameter, 12 of 70mm in diameter. 

Skewer sticks:  about 25


Red for oxygen, black for carbons and white for hydrogen. The use of plastic paint is the best choice. Do not use spray paint on the balls of EPS because they melt.

Building Instructions:

 Step 1: Bonds

Use the skewer sticks to make the bonds. Depending on the connected atoms the distance of bond changes. Example C-H bond:

1. We mark the top that will go in to the hydrogen and the length of the bond, 11cm.

 2. We cut the other side of the stick to 3,5cm of the end of the bond distance.

3. With a pencil sharpener we sharpen the end that it is not and that will go inside the carbon.


Lengths depending on the type of bond:

C-H: 11cm                        C=O: 12cm                        

C-C: 15cm                        O-H: 10cm

C=C: 13.5cm                    C-OH: 13.5cm

All bonds of the cycle (pentagon) have a length of 13.5cm.

Step 2: Painting

To paint EPS balls the most practical is stuck them with one of the bonds that we have prepared in the previous step, then it is much easier to pick up and leave them to dry in a pencil cup or  in a glass.

The carbon atoms (70mm ball diameter) are usually painted black, oxygen atoms (70mm ball diameter) are usually painted red and hydrogens (small balls) white.


Step 3: Connecting the bonds

A good option is to start building the cycle (pentagon) and after build the rest.

This would be a diagram of the angles of the molecule. The carbons outside the cycle are tetrahedral therefore it has angles 109.5 ° 
between their bonds. The angle that form the bond C-O-H is also of 109.5 º.
